Hi all! We're so excited about the hybrid WisCon Vid Party we're planning this year, and we're looking for help to make it the best it can be. We need assistance with several different tasks, including:

Subtitling

The WisCon Vid Party airs all vids with subtitles, which means we have to create subtitles for any vids that don't have subtitles already. Even if you can only subtitle one vid, that helps!

However, we'd like additional volunteers to assist with:
  • Basic subtitling: if you can create a subtitle file that we can play in VLC, we can send you a list of vids to caption. You can do this by using a dedicated program (e.g. Jubler, Aegisub), using a non-linear editor and exporting the subs separately (e.g. Da Vinci Resolve, Premiere, Final Cut, Vegas), or using a text document template and putting in the timing by hand.

  • Subtitling for difficult videos: some video types are hard for some of our subtitlers to work on; for example, an older video codec might not open in Jubler or Da Vinci Resolve. If you're good at troubleshooting video issues, we'll send you just the files that gave other subtitlers trouble!

  • Subtitling for complex subtitle situations: recent WisCon Vid Parties have included vids that already contain embedded subtitles (for non-English language sources) or embedded text (comics vids, some styles of youtube vids, etc). These may require coloring or animating subtitles to make them visible, or editing the subtitles to be visible below the main image. If you know how to make and export vtt subtitles or other animated subtitles, or if you're comfortable editing video and subtitles to air the subtitles below the video, we'd really appreciate your assistance. If you can only subtitle a few vids, but you can handle competing text information, let us know and we'll send these specific vids your way.

If you can assist, please comment here or email vidparty dot wiscon at gmail.com.

Content Notes Screening

The WisCon Vid Party produces or solicits content notes for all the vids we screen. We have a fairly detailed lists of content notes - for example, we list strobing or flashing effects, extremely fast edits, stutter edits, and shaky cam as separate content notes. Filling these out for all vids means that we need volunteers to screen vids in advance of the Vid Party and ticky the appropriate tickies.

[personal profile] sasha_feather, who usually organizes this process, is not available this year, so we'll need some additional help!

If you can assist, please comment here or email vidparty dot wiscon at gmail.com.

Suggesting Vids or Fandoms

If there's a vid or two that you think would be perfect for WisCon, let us know via the Vid Suggestion Form.

In this form, you can suggest vids for three different kinds of playlists:

  • Know of a vid that has you singing along every time? Suggest it for the singalong.

  • Know of a vid that has you chair dancing whenever you watch it? Suggest it for the dancealong.

  • Thinking about that vid that WisCon needs to see? We'll try to fit it into a the show.

If there are fandoms that you're particularly hoping to see vids for, please let us know in the comments here! I love vid searching and I will see what I can find.

Subtitling

The WisCon Vid Party airs all vids with subtitles, which means we have to create subtitles for any vids that don't have subtitles already. [personal profile] runawaynun leads the subtitling team and is amazingly skilled at this work!

However, we'd like additional volunteers to assist with:
  • Basic subtitling: if you can create an srt file, we can send you a list of vids to caption.

  • Subtitling for video issues: some video types don't open in Jubler, so if you are able to subtitle in other software that would be very helpful. If you can only subtitle a few vids, but you can handle things like atypical file types and codecs or variable frame rate, let us know and we'll send the problem files your way.

  • Subtitling for complex subtitle situations: recent WisCon Vid Parties have included vids that already contain embedded subtitles (for non-English language sources) or embedded text (comics vids, some styles of youtube vids, etc). Content Notes Screening

The WisCon Vid Party prints and shares playlists that include a set of ticky boxes for vid content notes. [personal profile] sasha_feather organizes the content note checking, to make sure that every vid on the list is screened before the show for the various content notes. For example, we have four different ticky boxes for things that are often described as just "physical triggers" - strobing or flashing effects, extremely fast edits, stutter edits, and shaky cam. Filling these out for all vids means that we need volunteers to screen vids in advance of the Vid Party and ticky the appropriate tickies.

If you can assist, please comment here or email vidparty dot wiscon at gmail.com.

Suggesting Vids

If you don't want to make a full playlist, but there's a vid or two that you think would be perfect for WisCon, let us know via the Vid Suggestion Form.

  • Know of a vid that has you chair dancing whenever you watch it? Suggest it for the dancealong.

  • Thinking about that vid that WisCon needs to see, but don't have a whole playlist to go around it? Suggest it for the community-built playlist and we'll try to fit it into a the show.

Hello!
Do any of you fine folks want to assist with doing content notes / warnings for the WisCon vid show?

It is not difficult work, just a bit time consuming, and you must be willing/able to watch vids that do not yet have content notes assigned. It involves making some judgment calls.

I am enjoying the work but there are quite a number of vids, and the work will go faster with more of us. Also sometimes it's nice to have more sets of eyes on these kinds of things.

Comment or contact me via email if you want to help!

I'm also frequently on twitter [personal profile] sasha_feather

I hope to get this work done by Tuesday night. There are about 80 vids to go through, and I've done about 20 already.

SUBTITLE CREW!

We have vids ready and waiting for your subtitling services. Most importantly, subtitles help make our Vid Show accessible so more folks can enjoy Vid Party, but the added bonus is that subtitles also turn each vid into an opportunity for Sing Along.

If you're ready to help, just leave a comment!

[subtitle crew] "I would like to write the words that go here and transcribe the audio that accompanies the pictures behind me"

Or just, yknow, "I'M IN!"

Thanks so much!

I'm going to cut to the chase here: we have a LOT of vids still in need of subtitling. Please consider taking on 1, 2, 3 or more vids to subtitle. It really makes a big difference for folks when Vid Party is fully subtitled. We are NOT on track for a fully subtitled Vid Party.

PLEASE SIGN UP HERE

Thank you!!!

P.S. Premieres are due tomorrow. If you need an extension for your premiering vid, email me at: vidparty[dot]wiscon[at]gmail[dot]com

Subtitle Squad! For the last two years we have attempted to screen a fully subtitled Vid Party, and you all have come through with incredible subtitling heroics.

I am happy to announce that we have a couple of playlists! And I anticipate more coming in very soon...

Do you have the srt to help make Vid Party more accessible?

If you are willing to help make subtitles, please reply here with a good email to contact you (comments are screened) and I will send you a playlist to subtitle! Try subtitling one vid a day and we'll be all set for the party, a week from Saturday. We would prefer folks to sign on for a full playlist (4-7 vids), but if you can only take on 1,2 or 3, we'd still appreciate the help.

Thanks!

p.s. we have excellent tutorials on making subtitle files here.

Hey party people!

Getting excited for WisCon Vid Party? We're 10 days away! WOOOOOOOO!!!! We have some pretty spectacular Premieres and Playlists all queued and ready to go. We just have ONE. MORE. THING--

SUBTITLES! Subtitles mean that more folks can enjoy Vid Party. We really wanted to get as many vids subtitled this year as possible, and that means we need volunteers!

If you have never made a subtitle file before -- thats ok! We have a couple excellent tutorials on how to make SRT files (subtitles) that we can play along with each vid.

Hi everyone,

We are in need of a handful of volunteers for two activities which need to happen over the next few weeks, before Wiscon.

1. Permission wrangling

We try to contact vidders and get their permission to use their vids for our party. Your job, if you are up for it, is to leave comments on vidders' DW/LJ/etc, telling them about the vid party and checking that it's OK for us to show their vid. We'll provide a "form letter" that you can cut and paste, so you don't have to come up with your own words. When they respond, you update our spreadsheet to say you've got permission.

You will need: DW and LJ accounts (or OpenID login), access to Google spreadsheets
Your time commitment: 1 hour or more

2. Subtitling

This year we're having a "singalong" show at which the vids will be subtitled. We're going to contact the vidders and ask them either to submit subtitle files OR grant permission for us to create the subtitles on their behalf. If they want us to create the subtitles, that's where you come in. You'll be given instructions, but in short, it's a text file with a certain format which is pretty easy to create.

You will need: VLC or other vid playing software that supports subtitles, any text editing software
Your time commitment: about 1 hour per vid you subtitle

You don't need to be attending to volunteer. This is something that anyone can do, whether they're attending Wiscon or not. So if you'd like to support the Wiscon Vid Party in a way that's purely online, this is a great opportunity.

If you'd like to help out with either of these jobs, please leave us a comment below, in the following format:

Email: (your email address -- or let us know if you prefer to PM it to us)
Permission-seeking: Y/N
Subtitling: Y/N
How many hours can you volunteer? (1 or more)

Neither [personal profile] were_duck nor I are active on LJ any more. Is anyone here active over there, and could help us out with some outreach, such as cross-posting announcements to the [livejournal.com profile] wiscon and [livejournal.com profile] vidding communities?
