Vidding, feminism, and science fiction: three great tastes that taste great together. Don't you think?
WisCon is a feminist science fiction convention held each May in Madison, Wisconsin, USA. The WisCon Vid Party began in 2010, and 2012 will be the second year we accept premiere vids. For more information about WisCon and the vid party, see our general information post from last year. This year we'll be having more themed segments, but the basic outline is the same.
We are looking for premiere vids (never screened or posted online before) as well as for vids posted in the last year that you think are especially appropriate for WisCon.
We welcome all fanvids in all genres and from all traditions of fannish video production, so long as they have some connection to WisCon's focus on feminism and science fiction. WisCon defines feminism broadly, and we're interested in vids that engage with any aspect of gender, sexuality, race, disability, and/or class.
Also:
• If you're submitting a premiere, your vid must never have been shown at a convention or posted online before.
• We prefer that your vid is no longer than 5 minutes.
• We especially welcome vids from fans who may never have submitted a vid to a convention before, or from newbie vidders.
• You don't have to be attending Wiscon to submit a premiering vid! But please come if you can; it's a great con.
Deadlines
The organizers' lives got a little out of control this year, so we're making this post on the late side––although we do know of at least two people who have already started working on WisCon premieres! If you're planning to submit a premiere vid, we'd love for you to let us know as soon as you can so we can begin to get a sense of how long our Premieres show will be.
Our deadline is Friday, May 11, 2012, two weeks before the con. Yes, two months isn't very long, but if we'd announced it six months ago you'd probably have started seriously thinking about it when we posted a reminder around now anyway... right? :)
Please follow
wiscon_vidparty,
wiscon, or
vidding if you want to see more info, reminders, and so on. (We will also crosspost to
wiscon and
vidding.)
The vids will show on the evening of Friday 25th May, 2012, and will be posted online within a week of the show. If you think you can make a vid by the con but not by the May 11 deadline, let us know.
How to submit a premiere vid
Simply fill in this handy form, giving us basic information about your vid letting us know where we can download it.
Your download URL may be any site that will allow us to download the vid, whether it's your own web space or a service like MediaFire. (Of course, if your vid is a premiere, you shouldn't publish the link anywhere else until after the premiere show.) We'll download the vid and contact you within a few days to let you know we've got it, or to let you know if we had any problems. If you don't hear from us within a week, please ping us.
We can accept vids in any format that will play in VLC -- for instance Quicktime (.mov), AVI/DIVX, MP4, and WMV files are all fine. We recommend you do a high quality export -- no file size is too large for us! Though realistically, we've found that just about any .mov/avi/mp4/wmv in the 50MB-100MB range will be fine, and even down to around 30MB can be acceptable. If your export looks like it has problems, we'll let you know and give you a chance to re-export and re-upload.
By submitting a premiere vid to the Wiscon Vid Party, you're agreeing to the following:
• You will post your premiere vid online within 1 week of the Vid Party (that is, by June 3rd, 2012) and send us the link, either by email or by commenting on a post we will make for the purpose on
wiscon_vidparty. This is because we want to post links to all the vids we screened a week after the con, so your new fans can leave comments for you.
• We strongly recommend you post both a downloadable and a streaming version.
• You agree that we can redistribute the vid. We're not currently planning on making a DVD, but we want to leave our options open. Also, if you don't post your vid online within a week, we may post it for you.
• You agree to work with the vid party organisers to negotiate a warning statement if necessary.
On warnings
• Our vid party will provide warnings for common triggers, so that those who are affected can manage their own risk in attending.
• We will post warnings (behind a cut) on the [community profile] wiscon_vidparty community before the party, and make them available in printed form at the party. We will also provide more information via email on request.
• We encourage you to suggest any warnings you think would apply to your vid. If we feel that additional/different warnings are necessary, we will work with you to come up with a mutually acceptable solution. If we can't come to an agreement, you may withdraw your vid from our premieres show.
Other notes
• You may optionally submit a subtitled vid, and it will be played with subtitles at the vid party. Our preferred format is a .srt file to go alongside the video itself, but text as part of the video itself is also OK. If you are providing a .srt, please make a zipfile containing your vid and the .srt together.
• If your vid fits in well with one of our themed shows then we may play your premiere there, rather than in the main premiere show. Regardless, premieres will be clearly identified on our programme/playlists.
• Our viewing environment is not pristine and theatre-like. Our vid party runs entirely on donations (we literally passed a hat around last time), so although we do our best to provide decent quality A/V within those limitations, we want to be up-front about the fact that it's not perfect. You can find out more about the culture and style of the party on our general info post.

Does this announcement make you think of a recent vid that would be perfect for a feminist science fiction con, but you didn't make it? Just drop us a link in the comments below, and if we want to include it we'll get in touch with the vidder. Or drop them a line and ask them to submit it!

*flails, despite months of having an idea* I am determined to make a premiere! Let it be stated publicly.
Also possibly I will submit another vid for you to think about, in addition to a premiere? Assuming that's cool?
Will be less ego-centric and think about other vids too...:)
