Call for Premieres!
Mar. 2nd, 2015 12:28 pmHey Party People -- it's that time again :D
Call for Premieres!
Once again, we are seeking your premiere vids! Each year we have some incredible submissions by experienced and newbie vidders. We would love to see your work at this year’s Vid Party!
We welcome all fanvids in all genres and from all traditions of fannish video production, so long as they have some connection to WisCon's focus on feminism and science fiction. WisCon defines feminism broadly, and we're interested in vids that engage with any aspect of gender, sexuality, race, disability, and/or class. We don’t want definitions to limit you; if you’re interested in WisCon’s themes and consider your vid to engage with these ideas, we’d love to have it at WisCon. We consider vid theme to be as relevant as source genre.
If you’re looking for inspiration, please check out last year’s fantastic premieres!
She Knows (So Close 夕陽天使) by thuviaptarth and spring green
Come ‘Round for Tea (Marvel comic books) by garrideb
Special Education (Fringe) by OneOfGloriasJudys
Lonely Little Petunia (The Walking Dead) by kiki_miserychic
Spiralling (Continuum) by kuwdora
Become You (Xena: Warrior Princess) by fray-adjacent
Watershed (Wonder Woman) by chaila
Note:
If you're submitting a premiere, your vid must never have been shown at a convention or posted online before.
We prefer that your vid is no longer than 5 minutes.
We welcome vids from fans who may never have submitted a vid to a convention before, or from newbie vidders.
You don't have to be attending Wiscon to submit a premiering vid!
Deadlines
If you're planning to submit a premiere vid, we'd love for you to let us know as soon as you can so we can begin to get a sense of how long our Premieres show will be.
The deadline is Friday, May 8, 2015, two weeks before the con.
If you need flexibility with this deadline, please contact us and we can discuss. Please follow
wiscon_vidparty,
wiscon/
wiscon, or
vidding/
vidding if you want to see more info, reminders, etc.
How to Submit a Premiere Vid
To submit, simply fill in this submission form, giving us basic information about your vid and letting us know where we can download it.
We'll download the vid and contact you within a few days to let you know we've got it, or to let you know if we had any problems. If you don't hear from us within a week, please ping us at vidparty.wiscon at gmail.com.
We can accept vids in any format that will play in VLC -- for instance Quicktime (.mov), AVI/DIVX, MP4, and WMV files are all fine. We recommend you do a high quality export -- no file size is too large for us! Though realistically, we've found that just about any .mov/avi/mp4/wmv in the 50MB-100MB range will be fine, and even down to around 30MB can be acceptable. If your export looks like it has problems, we'll let you know and give you a chance to re-export and re-upload.
By submitting a premiere vid to the Wiscon Vid Party, you're agreeing to the following:
You will post your premiere vid online within 1 week of the Vid Party (that is, by May 31, 2015) and send us the link, either by email or by commenting on a post we will make for the purpose on
wiscon_vidparty. This is because we want to post links to all the vids we screened a week after the con, so your new fans can leave comments for you.
We encourage you to suggest any trigger warnings you think would apply to your vid. If we feel that additional/different warnings are necessary, we will work with you to come up with a mutually acceptable solution. Warnings are included on handouts made available to attendees of the vid party, and will be posted online at
wiscon_vidparty.
Additional details about our warnings policy
The Vid Party provides trigger warnings as an accessibility measure. Our warnings are intended to help attendees manage their risk if they are subject to common psychological or physical triggers. These warnings are not intended as a "rating" or censorship measure.
We will post warnings (behind a cut) here at
wiscon_vidparty before the party, and make them available in printed form at the party. We will also provide more information via email by request.
Detailed list of warnings we provide:
Psychological triggers
We warn for: Sexual assault and coercion; abusive relationships; suicide and self-harm; extreme violence or gore; torture, police brutality, and institutional violence.
We don't warn for: Nudity; sexual activity; non-heteronormative sexuality; general violence including action sequences, shooting, martial arts, etc; explicit language; other "mature" themes.
Physical triggers
We warn for: Strobing and flashing effects, very fast cutting, "shaky cam", other effects or source material deemed likely to trigger seizures or migraines.
We don't warn for: Incidental bright lights in source (eg. explosions); also please note that vids are by their nature bright and fast moving, so we only warn for those that are particularly so.
Subtitles
Thanks to incredible volunteer participation and support, 100% of last year's Vid Party screened with subtitles. We would love to continue this support for accessibility and inclusion at this year's Vid Party. We will be working to make subtitles available for as many vids as possible, either during the screening or for download afterwards.
Please provide a subtitle file for your vid if you can! Our preferred format is a .srt file to go alongside the video itself, but text as part of the video itself is also fine. Instructions for subtitling your vids can be found at the vid party Dreamwidth community here and here, though you are welcome to use any technique that works for you.
Other notes
Our viewing environment is not pristine and theater-like. Our vid party environment is fairly low key and casual (though people definitely focus on the vids!); the party runs entirely on donations and people are able to pop in and out of the room. Although we do our best to provide good quality audio/video within those limitations, we want to be up-front about the fact that it's not perfect, if that is a concern for anyone.
Playlists
Playlist sign-ups will open this Saturday, March 7th at 12pm CST! We wanted to give you a bit of notice because sign-ups can fill-up pretty quickly.
