Playlists

We have the majority of our playlists! \o/ Thank you amazing playlist curators! We're suuuuper excited about this year's mix.

However, we don't have an AMV specific playlist and would love for someone to help us out. AMVs are an important part of remix culture and are a regular fan favorite at Vid Party. Remember playlists can be as few as 3 or as many as 7 vids long! We would love for someone to pull this together for us. Comment here or email vidparty [dot] wiscon [at] gmail [dot] com.

Premieres

By popular request, Premieres deadline is EXTENDED to 11:59pm PST, May 17th.
If you think you may need more time than this, you should email us (see above).

Playlist sign-ups are open!

We want as many people as possible to be involved in the programming for the party, and we prefer shorter blocks of programming rather than long vidshows. So, just like last year, we would like to invite you to curate a themed vid playlist (i.e. a short/mini vid show) that's 10-25 minutes in length, or 3-6ish vids long, to play at the party. Curators choose a theme and pick 3-6ish vids that fit the theme. If you're attending WisCon, you can introduce your playlist with a description of your theme (if you want!); if you aren't attending, you can write a little introduction and we will read it for you.

Here’s a list of playlists from previous years if you want to get an idea of how this has worked in the past.

For planning purposes, please let us know by commenting below or emailing vidparty.wiscon at gmail.com if you are planning to create a playlist.

More information on themes and curating )

We would like to gather playlists as soon as possible. Please get them to us by Friday May 1 at the latest! Email your playlist info to vidparty.wiscon at gmail.com.

Please note: this deadline is one week earlier than Premieres!

And once more, let us know in the comments below or by email if you are planning to curate a playlist!

Also feel free to comment below or contact us if you want to toss around potential ideas, suggest themes that other people might want to curate (if you don’t want to create the playlist yourself), or chat about vids that would be great to see at Wiscon!

Hey Party People -- it's that time again :D

Call for Premieres!

Once again, we are seeking your premiere vids! Each year we have some incredible submissions by experienced and newbie vidders. We would love to see your work at this year’s Vid Party!

We welcome all fanvids in all genres and from all traditions of fannish video production, so long as they have some connection to WisCon's focus on feminism and science fiction. WisCon defines feminism broadly, and we're interested in vids that engage with any aspect of gender, sexuality, race, disability, and/or class. We don’t want definitions to limit you; if you’re interested in WisCon’s themes and consider your vid to engage with these ideas, we’d love to have it at WisCon. We consider vid theme to be as relevant as source genre.

If you’re looking for inspiration, please check out last year’s fantastic premieres!

Here are the premieres and all the playlists from the WisCon 38 Vid Party! See this handout for our warnings policy and warnings information for all vids.

The vid party programming is largely made up of what attendees and interested folks submit, which we think makes the party pretty fun and special. So enormous thanks to all the vidders who submitted premieres and all the curators who submitted playlists, and to all the volunteers who helped us subtitle the show! If you enjoy the vids, please follow the links to the vidders' journals/sites and let them know!

Party People!

1) The Vid Party is Saturday night beginning at 9pm in Room 629! It's scheduled from 9-3am, but likely won't go quite that long (unless y'all want to close the place down!). Premieres (never before seen vids!) are projected to start around 10:45 or 11, singalong playlist will likely start around 12:30am! We'll post a playlist with warnings in this comm ahead of time, and there will be programs with warnings in the vid party room itself. There are lots of amazing playlists submitted by awesome people, and hopefully you will all enjoy it. (#VidParty! Tweet it! No, seriously, tweet it, because I'm not there and I want to see reactions!)

2) There's no vid discussion panel on the proper schedule, but there will be a Vid Discussion Impromptu Panel at 10:30 am on Sunday in the impromptu programming room. What could be better than talking about the awesome vids you will see at the party? Don't miss it!

Tell your friends! Watch vids, ooh, ahh, sing, discuss, it'll be great.

Hey party people!

Getting excited for WisCon Vid Party? 1 week away! WOOOOOOOO!!!! We have some pretty spectacular Premieres and Playlists all queued and ready to go. We just have ONE. MORE. THING--

SUBTITLES! Subtitles mean that more folks can enjoy Vid Party. We really wanted to get as many vids subtitled this year as possible, and that means we need volunteers!

If you have never made a subtitle file before -- thats ok! We have a couple excellent tutorials on how to make SRT files (subtitles) that we can play along with each vid.

If you are willing to help make subtitles, please reply here with a good email to contact you (comments are screened) and I will send you a playlist to subtitle! Try subtitling one vid a day and we'll be all set for the party next Saturday. We would prefer folks to sign on for a full playlist (4-7 vids), but if you can only take on 1,2 or 3, we'd still appreciate the help.

Thanks!

This is just a quick reminder to get your premieres and playlist submissions for the Wiscon Vid Party in by the deadline, which is this Friday, May 9!

See here for info about submitting premieres, and see here for info about submitting your playlist!

It would be great to get everything we can by May 9, so we can organize the show and take stock of what we have and what gaps we have to fill. But if you need more time, please email us at vidparty.wiscon@gmail.com and let us know! (Otherwise we'll have to assume you aren't submitting, and that would be sad.)

Please feel free to ask any questions!

Hey there vidders and fans!

How's your vidding going? Are you excited for this year's Vid Party? We are too! This weekend marks 4 weeks until the deadline for Premieres.

If you need some help reaching the finish line, last month's Vidding Workshop has plenty of tips and resources. A big thank you to everyone who participated in making the workshop a success.

And, if you'd like more one-on-one help, we are continuing our mentorship program, as well.

Welcome to the [community profile] wiscon_vidparty vidding workshop! We hope this will be a chance for new or potential vidders to find out more about what’s involved in making a vid and to see the wide variety of ways vidders make vids, and for vidders of all skill levels to discuss vidding and share tips and ideas. Everyone is welcome to participate!

This workshop will be discussion- and question-based, so please, start or jump into any discussions you want to have and ask any questions about any aspect of vidding! Finding ideas, getting source, clipping (or not), editing programs, codecs, rendering, effects, specific technical issues you’re having, discussion about specific vids, discussing your own ideas, links to useful resources, tutorials, cheerleading--any and all vidding related topics are welcome.

We’ve created a few categories to keep some of the major topic threads organized. If you have a comment or question or want to start a discussion on a certain topic, just comment below the relevant subject. (We’re flexible though, so don’t fret too much about getting things in the right place. If in doubt, just give your thread a descriptive subject line so people can find it).

Feel free to add new threads if what you want to talk about isn't covered by the categories, but please give your comment a descriptive subject line so readers can tell what’s being discussed.

We have several awesome vidders who have volunteered to participate and introduce themselves at their convenience. We will be linking to their introductions as they appear. Keep an eye out and feel free to ask them specific questions!

From vids that critique sources from feminist angles, to vids that focus on feminist, underrepresented and/or diverse media and characters, to vids that celebrate female-centric fandoms and diverse communities, there are a lot of connections between vidding and feminism. In that spirit, we want to help build interest in and capacity for vidding in conjunction with vid programming at Wiscon and the Wiscon Vid Party. To help do this, we are announcing: (1) a vidding workshop, to be run the weekend of March 1-2, 2014 on [community profile] wiscon_vidparty; and (2) vidding mentorships!

You do NOT have to be attending Wiscon or planning to participate in the vid party to participate in either the workshop or mentoring. We want them to be general resources, open to all interested vidders of all experience and skill levels. Read on for more info and to participate!

March 2014 Vidding Workshop )

As we put the workshop together, we need vidders to participate! All you need to do is be willing to write a “vidder intro” post of whatever length/detail you want talking about vidding, your vids, how you got into vidding, and a short overview of your vidding process, and be able to be around a bit to answer questions at your convenience the weekend of March 1-2 (or in the days following). Vidders, please sign up by commenting (comments are screened) or emailing vidparty.wiscon at gmail.com. Please include contact info!

Once again, we are also soliciting premiere vids to play at the Wiscon vid party! The vids will premiere at the party on May 23, 2014. We’ve had lots of excellent premieres in the past years, and we are excited to keep building a tradition of vids at Wiscon.

If you are looking for inspiration, here are last year’s premieres from Wiscon 37, and this playlist includes the premieres from Wiscon 36!

Note:
• If you're submitting a premiere, your vid must never have been shown at a convention or posted online before.
• We prefer that your vid is no longer than 5 minutes.
• We welcome vids from fans who may never have submitted a vid to a convention before, or from newbie vidders.
• You don't have to be attending Wiscon to submit a premiering vid!

Deadlines
If you're planning to submit a premiere vid, we'd love for you to let us know so we can begin to get a sense of how long our Premieres show will be.

The deadline is Friday, May 9, 2014, two weeks before the con.

If you need flexibility with this deadline, please contact us and we can discuss. Please follow [community profile] wiscon_vidparty or [community profile] wiscon/[livejournal.com profile] wiscon if you want to see more info, reminders, etc.

How to submit and more information )

Also seeking curators!
If you aren't able to make a premiere but want to participate in the vid party, you can also submit a short themed playlist (i.e. a short vid show) to play at the party. Or do both!

Upcoming vidding workshop
We are planning an online vidding workshop in early March 2014 to connect vidders with newbie vidders or potential vidders with questions about any aspect of vidding, including matching interested newer vidders with more experienced mentors(/cheerleaders). Watch [community profile] wiscon_vidparty for more information!

It’s time to start thinking about this year’s vid party, yay! [personal profile] metatxt and myself, [personal profile] chaila, are organizing this year’s party, with lots of help from other folks.

Here’s a list of playlists from previous years if you want to get an idea of how this has worked in the past (last year was the first year we broke the party down into smaller blocks like this).

For planning purposes, please let us know by commenting below or emailing vidparty.wiscon at gmail.com if you are planning to create a playlist.

More information about themes and curating )

We would like to gather playlists as soon as possible. Please get them to us by Friday May 9 at the latest! Email your playlist info to vidparty.wiscon at gmail.com.

ETA 3/8/14: Formal signups for curating are closed because we're full up. But things tend to change as the con gets closer--people get busy, things come up--so email us at vidparty.wiscon@gmail.com if you want us to contact you as a backup if space in the show opens up!

We are trying to have subtitles for as many vids as we can at WisCon this year––not just for the singalong show. If you made a playlist or a premiere, we asked that you subtitle if you can... We appreciate that not everyone will be able to, though. If you like subtitling (or think you might like it) and want to do some vids for us in the next few days (um, the party is a week Friday, so that would be the deadline...), drop a comment to this post and we will let you know if there are vids that need subtitles.

There's a great subtitling tutorial that Skud made, for creating .srt from text files. .srt files store the text of subtitles, and programs like VLC will play them automatically. (You can add them to video files in iTunes as well, though it's a bit more complicated.)

However, I find that Skud's method takes me forever, and in the past few months I've been experimenting with different programs to create .srt files. I have found that I am most efficient when using Jubler, with which I can now subtitle most vids in less than half an hour. So in the hope of getting more subtitles for the vid party, I am making this tutorial!

Today is the deadline for WisCon vid party premieres! Do you have one?

If you are working on a vid and need more time, drop us a comment or email me futuransky at gmail.com.
futuransky: Sarah Connor and the words THE FUTURE ISN'T SET (sarah connor future)
[personal profile] futuransky
The WisCon vid party is an open space with a diverse audience -- some people who love vids and vidding and stay to watch vids all night, and some who pop in for a minute to learn about what these strange music video things are. In the past, we've borrowed from Vividcon and shown vids in curated shows that are each an hour long. But this year we'd like to change things up a little bit. We want to gather the vids we show together in shorter chunks, and we want more people to be able to be involved in programming!

So we would like to invite you to curate a themed playlist that's 15-25 minutes in length, or 3-6 vids long. If you're attending WisCon, you will be invited up to the front to introduce your playlist; if you aren't, you can write a little introduction and we will read it for you.

Our broad theme this year is gender and technology, but we're open to extremely wide-ranging definitions of what that might mean. Technologies can be biological, social, mechanical, and they can affect bodies, relationships, and worlds in so very many different ways. Some themes that occurred to us include cyborgs, robots, superheroes, technology and disability... We welcome the inclusion of videos from any remix / fan video tradition, and we would especially like to see playlists include vids that have been made in the last year.

There are only so many hours available in the vid party, and we need to organize permissions, warnings, and if possible subtitles as well as make sure we don't have overlap in vids shown, so if you would like to make a playlist, please let us know as soon as possible!

We will need:

• a title for your playlist (for example, last year [personal profile] sasha_feather called her longer vidshow The Abuse of Authority)
• for each vid: the name, vidder, fandom, length, and a link where we can download a copy
• the overall length of your playlist (minimum 15 minutes, maximum 25 minutes)

If you make a playlist, we will ask you to:
• check in with vid creators to make sure they have no objection to their vid being screened
• let us know whether the vids in your list require warnings
• help us to get or make subtitle files for the vids in your list (if possible)

You might have to make edits to your planned playlist if one of the vids on it is already going to be screened in another playlist!

We would like to gather playlists as soon as possible. Please get them to us by Friday May 10 at the latest! Email futuransky at gmail.com.
