Once again, we are also soliciting premiere vids to play at the Wiscon vid party! The vids will premiere at the party on May 23, 2014. We’ve had lots of excellent premieres in the past years, and we are excited to keep building a tradition of vids at Wiscon.

We welcome all fanvids in all genres and from all traditions of fannish video production, so long as they have some connection to Wiscon's focus on feminism and science fiction. WisCon defines feminism broadly, and we're interested in vids that engage with any aspect of gender, sexuality, race, disability, and/or class. We don’t want definitions to limit you; if you’re interested in Wiscon’s themes and consider your vid to engage with these ideas, we’d love to have it at Wiscon.

If you are looking for inspiration, here are last year’s premieres from Wiscon 37, and this playlist includes the premieres from Wiscon 36!

• If you're submitting a premiere, your vid must never have been shown at a convention or posted online before.
• We prefer that your vid is no longer than 5 minutes.
• We welcome vids from fans who may never have submitted a vid to a convention before, or from newbie vidders.
• You don't have to be attending Wiscon to submit a premiering vid!

If you're planning to submit a premiere vid, we'd love for you to let us know so we can begin to get a sense of how long our Premieres show will be.

The deadline is Friday, May 9, 2014, two weeks before the con.

If you need flexibility with this deadline, please contact us and we can discuss. Please follow [community profile] wiscon_vidparty or [community profile] wiscon/[ profile] wiscon if you want to see more info, reminders, etc.

How to submit a premiere vid

To submit, simply fill in this submission form, giving us basic information about your vid and letting us know where we can download it.

We'll download the vid and contact you within a few days to let you know we've got it, or to let you know if we had any problems. If you don't hear from us within a week, please ping us at vidparty.wiscon at

We can accept vids in any format that will play in VLC -- for instance Quicktime (.mov), AVI/DIVX, MP4, and WMV files are all fine. We recommend you do a high quality export -- no file size is too large for us! Though realistically, we've found that just about any .mov/avi/mp4/wmv in the 50MB-100MB range will be fine, and even down to around 30MB can be acceptable. If your export looks like it has problems, we'll let you know and give you a chance to re-export and re-upload.

ETA: We've had some questions about whether vids have to use a sci-fi/fantasy/speculative fiction source since WisCon is a feminist sci-fi con. Our response: Use your best judgment. In short, we consider vid theme to be as relevant as source genre. For example, last year we had Premieres from non-SFF genre shows (Pretty Little Liars and Veronica Mars) that engaged the theme of women and technology. If you aren’t sure, feel free to talk to us about your vid!/ETA.

By submitting a premiere vid to the Wiscon Vid Party, you're agreeing to the following:
• You will post your premiere vid online within 1 week of the Vid Party (that is, by May 30, 2014) and send us the link, either by email or by commenting on a post we will make for the purpose on [community profile] wiscon_vidparty. This is because we want to post links to all the vids we screened a week after the con, so your new fans can leave comments for you.
• We encourage you to suggest any trigger warnings you think would apply to your vid. If we feel that additional/different warnings are necessary, we will work with you to come up with a mutually acceptable solution. Warnings are included on handouts made available to attendees of the vid party, and will be posted online at [community profile] wiscon_vidparty.

This year we will be working to make subtitles available for as many vids as possible, either during the screening or for download afterwards. Please provide a subtitle file for your vid if you can! Our preferred format is a .srt file to go alongside the video itself, but text as part of the video itself is also fine. Instructions for subtitling your vids can be found at the vid party Dreamwidth community, though you are welcome to use any technique that works for you.

Other notes
Our viewing environment is not pristine and theater-like. Our vid party environment is fairly low key and casual (though people definitely focus on the vids!); the party runs entirely on donations and people are able to pop in and out of the room. Although we do our best to provide good quality audio/video within those limitations, we want to be up-front about the fact that it's not perfect, if that is a concern for anyone.

Also seeking curators!
If you aren't able to make a premiere but want to participate in the vid party, you can also submit a short themed playlist (i.e. a short vid show) to play at the party. Or do both!

Upcoming vidding workshop
We are planning an online vidding workshop in early March 2014 to connect vidders with newbie vidders or potential vidders with questions about any aspect of vidding, including matching interested newer vidders with more experienced mentors(/cheerleaders). Watch [community profile] wiscon_vidparty for more information!

I wish I'd seen this earlier! I'm going to try to make a vid for Riley Neil(Intelligence) because honestly she is a real woman doing a kickass job and I adore her. However, I am away most of next week, so I may not get a vid done in time. I haven't made a vid for quite a while and I probably won't have enough time to make one that I'd show anyone. I just wanted you to know you've inspired me and if I pop up asking for beta help or something at least you know I am trying to make a vid. I love the idea of your convention. Wish I wasn't so far away. Good luck with it! :)
