chaila: Diana SWORDFIGHTING in a BALLGOWN. (wonder woman - fight)
[personal profile] chaila posting in [community profile] wiscon_vidparty
It’s time to start thinking about this year’s vid party, yay! [personal profile] metatxt and myself, [personal profile] chaila, are organizing this year’s party, with lots of help from other folks.

We want as many people as possible to be involved in the programming for the party, and we prefer shorter blocks of programming rather than long vidshows. So, just like last year, we would like to invite you to curate a themed vid playlist (i.e. a short/mini vid show) that's 10-25 minutes in length, or 3-6ish vids long, to play at the party. Curators choose a theme and pick 3-6ish vids that fit the theme. If you're attending WisCon, you can introduce your playlist with a description of your theme (if you want!); if you aren't attending, you can write a little introduction and we will read it for you.

Here’s a list of playlists from previous years if you want to get an idea of how this has worked in the past (last year was the first year we broke the party down into smaller blocks like this).

For planning purposes, please let us know by commenting below or emailing vidparty.wiscon at if you are planning to create a playlist.

We are open to any themed playlists that connect in some way to Wiscon’s feminist goals of exploring gender, race, sexuality, class, and disability in science fiction and fantasy, including a wide-ranging definition of what those things mean. The feminism might be in the sources themselves, in the argument or narrative of the vids, in the characters the vids choose to focus on, in the progression of the playlist, in the music chosen for the vids, or anywhere! It might be obvious or subtle. All of that is fine! We don’t want to limit you: if you think the theme and playlist work from a feminist angle, we’d love to see them. We welcome the inclusion of videos from any remix / fan video tradition, and we would especially like to see playlists include vids that have been made in the last year and vids for non-western sources of all kinds. Your vids do not have to be limited to sources that strictly fit definitions of science fiction or fantasy. Collaboratorations welcome, if you want to team up with someone else to create a playlist.

If you create a playlist, we will need:

• a title for your playlist (for example, last year [personal profile] metatxt called her playlist Magic is a Gendered Technology and [personal profile] futuransky called one of hers Crafting Narratives of Speculation and Resistance
• for each vid: the title, vidder, fandom, length, and a link where we can download a copy
• the overall length of your playlist (minimum 10 minutes, maximum 25 minutes)

If you make a playlist, we will ask you to:
• check in with vid creators to make sure they have no objection to their vid being screened (if you would prefer we do this, we can, but let us know with enough lead time!)
• let us know whether the vids in your list require warnings (we can help you with this too)
• help us to get or make subtitle files for the vids in your list (if possible)

You might have to make edits to your planned playlist if one of the vids on it is already going to be screened in another playlist!

We would like to gather playlists as soon as possible. Please get them to us by Friday May 9 at the latest! Email your playlist info to vidparty.wiscon at

And once more, let us know in the comments below or by email if you are planning to curate a playlist!

Also feel free to comment below or contact us if you want to toss around potential ideas, suggest themes that other people might want to curate (if you don’t want to create the playlist yourself), or chat about vids that would be great to see at Wiscon!

ETA 3/8/14: Formal signups for curating are closed because we're full up. But things tend to change as the con gets closer--people get busy, things come up--so email us at if you want us to contact you as a backup if space in the show opens up!

Yay! Thank you SO MUCH for organizing!!!!

I will make a playlist (probably made of mostly older vids since I have hardly watched any this year, but hey, we need to honor our history, right?), and I also offer my services in subtitling for whichever vids don't get submitted with captions.

I can help subtitle! I can also make a playlist (but only if you need one--I'd rather let others do it)

I have an idea for a playlist, but more research is required and one of the vids that inspired it is by someone who I don't think is in fandom any more. So. Tentative maybe? Do you need to know what the topic is right now?

So, is it ok if I make a purely femslash playlist? I got some vids I create for Legend of the seeker fandom, is this a valid fandom? :)

YES! Legend of the Seeker is a valid fandom. Any science-fiction, fantasy, speculative historical (Reign, the White Queen, Black Sails -- for example), basically-- genre is fine. Femslash is fantastic! We would like a mix of vidders and vid sources, however. I am happy to work with you if you have more questions or need help.

Put me on as tentative for an AMV playlist if that is okay! (Still researching b/c I am ten years out of touch with AMV fandom.)

Hi! I wasn't sure if my comment here was enough for the 3/8 deadline and wanted to see if I was on the list or not! I was thinking of doing either a magical girls playlist or one on creativity (or both if I am ambitious), all AMVs.

Are yall still looking for people to curate playlists, or are you full up? If not, I'll happily volunteer to curate one!

Whoops! an extra character at the end of the url -- just delete the last character and hit enter. Sorry about that! and thanks for the heads up!

I think [personal profile] chaila has to edit the entry itself since she's the OP. Otherwise I'd go in and do it myself.

p.s. I totally knew your comment was going to be about our super not complicated warnings methodology. LOL. I will never get it these dramas. I mean...reading warnings is optional. There's the choice! Easy!
